Wait a minute! I have a few more questions.
What is the goal of the Vision 2020 program?
To strategically place and provide ongoing development for 500 international, Christian educators on the Asia-Pacific region by the year 2020.
What is the mission of the Vision 2020 program?
To enable more international, Christian educators to make Christlike Disciples in the unreached, and under-reached Harvest Fields of, the Asia-Pacific region.
What is the primary focus of the Vision 2020 program?
The primary focus is the educational institutions in the 100+ Asian cities with more than 1 million inhabitants but less than 3% Christian populations.
What qualifications or experience are needed?
In general, qualifications such as TESOL Certification, degrees in English (or the specific subject area to be taught), Educational licenses and certification, and teaching experience greatly increase one's chances of being hired by an overseas institution. For those who desire to teach English, TESOL certification is required.
Will I receive a salary?
Most of the locations on the region do pay a salary that is sufficient to cover a person's monthly living expenses. There are also strategic teaching opportunities that require a person to raise varying degrees of support.
Will I need to raise any funds in order to teach overseas?
That depends on where you feel God is calling you to serve. Some locations require no funds to be raised prior to taking the teaching assignment except for the cost of the airfare. Other locations require from $1,000 to $5,000. Still other locations require a person to be fully self funded.
What about student loans?
It is possible for someone who is a qualified teacher to find a teaching opportunity that provides a salary that is sufficient to also make loan payments. In some cases, one's student loan can be deferred if they accept an overseas assignment. Check with your loan provider for specific details.
How do I raise the funds that I need?
If your location requires you to raise funds, we will help you set up a page on an on-line fund raising site and give guidance on how you can build your support team.
How can I make disciples when I am full time teacher?
Every believer is called to make disciples. The primary reason for every occupation is to make disciples. Evangelism is an overflow, not just an activity. The Region and Field will work with teachers to help them develop as disciple makers.
What type of agreement will I sign?
In most cases, your contract will be with a local hiring educational institution. You will also be asked to sign a Covenant designed by Asiaserve, signifying your commitment to follow Jesus' command to make Christlike Disciples.
Will we be required to learn the language of our country?
Studying the local language is strongly encouraged as this is a tremendous way to build relationships. It also clear sends the message that you value the host culture. Due to time constraints, this will likely need to be done through a tutor or in an informal setting. There are also good on-line and DVD language helps that can be beneficial when used in conjunction with the input of a local language speaker.
Can a friend go with me?
This is a possibility, but only if
a. your friend is of the same sex as you;
b. your friend is also approved by WM, the Region, and the Field; and
c. your friend is hired by the same (or nearby) local educational institution.
